This song began several years ago as the creative brainchild of my brother Geordie, who wrote the first verse, the chorus and the chord progression. He and I refined it further over time, adding a bass line, and a lead lick, but we never added any new verses. Then a couple years ago I set aside yet another project I was working on and started in on this again. Penned two more verses, and arbitraily set the structure of verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-verse-chorus. I couldn't remember how the lead guitar parts used to go, so I made 'em up from scratch again. Turns out the structure (and the too-slow tempo), made the whole thing overly long, coming in at a ponderous five minates 20 seconds. Sigh...
Anyway, credit for what's good about this goes to Geordie, and you can blame me for any lyrical lame-ness, structural flaws or performance shortcomings.
Thanks for listening; here's the legal crap and the lyrics flyer:
Old Fashioned Guy
© 2007 Geordie Smith / Robert Smith
When I first looked at you
I knew that something was taking place
And when you came into view
I felt a love that time couldn’t erase
But time can teach you well
Heaven can change into hell
And I guess it’s nothing new
but darling, all I wanted to do
(it’s all I wanted to do)
Was just to be there, baby with you
(it’s all I wanted to do)
Just to be there, baby with you
I thought you wanted it too
But I was wrong, because
(Chorus):
The only kind of love to you is just passion
I guess I’m just an old-fashioned guy
And any kind of love to you is old-fashioned
I guess I’m just an old-fashioned guy
The things you began to do
kind of left me out in the cold
And when he came up to you
The one person that I wanted to hold
And you turned away from me
That’s when I knew how it was going to be
And I guess it’s nothing new
but darling, all I wanted to do
(it’s all I wanted to do)
Was just to be there, baby with you
(it’s all I wanted to do)
Just to be there, baby with you
I thought you wanted it too
But I was wrong
(Chorus, bridge, chorus)
Now there’s nothing left to do
nothing left to say
I can’t change your point of view
I wouldn’t want to anyway
But I wanted you to know
No matter how your feelings flow
That it’s really nothing new
but darling, all I wanted to do
(it’s all I wanted to do)
Was just to be there, baby with you
(it’s all I wanted to do)
Just to be there, baby with you
I thought you wanted it too
But I was wrong
(Chorus)
I feel so cold
and so alone...
